Deliberative Mechanism at the University of Mondragón (HUHEZI)

The Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences at the University of Mondragón (which is part of the Mondragón Cooperative Group) is spread across three campuses (Eskoriatza, Aretxabaleta, and Bilbao), four fields of study (education, cooperativism, communication, and the humanities), a Center for Educational Innovation (KoLaborategia), and an Institute for Cooperative Studies (LANKI).
One of the Faculty’s challenges relates to the inclusion of students in its operations and decision-making; since they are not cooperative members, they participate only formally in the Faculty’s governing body through two representatives on the Governing Council, and informally in the Student Assembly (Ikasleen Batzarra).
Within this framework, a working group has been established within the Faculty—with the support of Arantzazulab and Deliberativa—to explore how deliberative tools can foster greater student inclusion in the Faculty’s formal governance. Consequently, a consultative mechanism is being designed—linked to the Governing Council and composed of students, faculty, and staff—that follows the guidelines of deliberative tools (random selection, rotation, and informed deliberation), with the aim of being activated on a regular basis.
This project also provides an opportunity for the Faculty to connect with the UniDelib network—which brings together universities around the world that are joining the deliberative movement—and for Lanki to continue developing its expertise in the field of deliberation.
